Historical Cornwall - Newlyn Harbour, 1920 Single Card
NEWLYN HARBOUR, ABOUT 1920
Alfred Robert Quinton (1853-1934)
Newlyn has been an important fishing port since the 15th century. Helped by the railways, which allowed rapid transportation to London and other major cities, the fishing industry expanded rapidly in the late 19th century and a new harbour was built in the 1880s, and the lighthouse which was added in 1914. Today Newlyn lands the highest value fish catch in the UK.
In the 1880s the port began to attract a group of artists who painted au plein air, that is outdoors using natural light; they later became known as Newlyn School. They included painters such as Stanhope Forbes, Norman Garstin, Harold and Laura Knight and Lamorna Birch. Many of their pictures are of the fishing ports of West Cornwall and of fishermen and their wives.
