- Stanhope Alexander Forbes R.A (1857-1947)

After studying in France and Belgium and painting in Brittany, Forbes came to Newlyn in 1884 and was immediately captivated by the scenery and people in the area.
Together with a group of fellow artists he founded the Newlyn School of Art which became famous for its superb realism, in "Plein-air" painting. Forbes' pictures hang regularly in the R.A. This painting depicted the traditional wedding breakfast in Newlyn a century ago. It is interesting to note that all those participating in the scene were well-known people, many of whom have descendants living in Penwith now.
