Paper mâché is one of the most popular of crafts practiced in Kashmir. The tradition of Paper mâché in Kashmir has its origin rooted in the 15th century, when King Zain ur Abideen invited many accomplished artists and craftsmen from Central Asia. This Paper mâché bauble has been made by a team of exceptionally skilled artists in Kashmir. Paper mâché is a unique combination of designs and colour which is practiced on variety of moulded objects. The artists use the traditional technique in giving form to the products. This beautiful technique involves the method of mixing paper pulp with water which is later given the shape of the mould. As the pulp is dried, it is removed from the clay mould, giving the desired shape, cut into forms and glued together.
The artists then start the ornamentation of the bauble on the smoothened surface. The colours used during the ornamentation are made from organic pigments (plants and minerals), diluted in water and painted on the surface of the object. Once the ornamentation of the product is done, the products are then giving lacquer coating which protects them from any water damage and gives extra durability. The finished masterpiece reflects the keen attention to detail and sheer effort put in to produce such work of extraordinary aesthetic.
